Fi’s Pregnancy

Chapter 6: Grossesse et Naissance

Fi stands on the scales. That’s strange, she thinks – her trousers feel tight and she can barely do them up.
Fi checks her diary and realises her period is quite late.

Fi decides to go to a pharmacy to buy a pregnancy test kit. She comes back with 2  different types. She’s worried now that she might well be pregnant. And begins to feel guilty. It all happened so quickly – her heart was racing now just thinking back. How many days did she miss taking the pill?

She reads the instructions carefully and sure enough – she’s pregnant. She’s not sure how Louis might react so she waits a while to tell him the news.

And now she feels nauseous
Fi goes into Louis’s home office – he’s listening to music as he often does
Fi says “I’ve taken 2 different tests & I’m definitely pregnant, Louis. I thought my period was just late. “
“Look Louis”
Louis isn’t really too surprised. So now it’s important to get the divorce finalised.
Fi makes an appointment for a sonar scan. She’s relieved to discover that Dr Grand-Coeur speaks english
Louis tells Fi that their baby will hear his music and their voices. So they must always speak softly now
Louis plays for Fi
“That was beautiful”, says Fi
Fi has to go to her ultrasound scan on her own. Louis can’t take time off work at the moment.
Fi has become used to the metro and doesn’t find it difficult getting around Paris on her own now
Fi waits for the metro connection for the final bit of her first journey to the Maternity Clinic
Fi meets Dr Grand-Coeur for the first time

Fi arrives very early for her appointment. In the waiting room are a number of women, all with different size bump – some have a partner/ husband with them. Some sit with a friend. But she is all on her own.

She wonders if she is the only non French patient. Fi begins to feel a bit worried. But she mustn’t get negative. It’s probably natural to feel the way she does. Don’t people say that pregnant women get very emotional?

Dr Grand-Coeur sounds very kind so she stops worrying – at least for now.

“You’re having twins, me dear!” says Dr G-C
Dr Grand-Coeur checks Fi’s blood pressure
Dr G-C tells Fi that the next time they will see each other is when she goes into labour
